Q&A Bible Answers

Exodus 20:18-21 NASB

And all the people were watching and hearing the thunder and the lightning flashes, and the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it all, they trembled [nûaʿ] and stood at a distance. 19 Then they said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but do not have God speak to us, or we will die!” 20 However, Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid [yārē']; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear [yirʼâh] of Him may remain with you, so that you will not sin.” 21 So the people stood at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.

28 And do not be afraid (phobeō) of those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear (phobeō) Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are two sparrows not sold for an assarion? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31 So do not fear (phobeō); you are more valuable than a great number of sparrows.

“God is therefore to be feared, even by the best saints in this world. Knowing the terrors of the Lord, we persuade men to ‘stand in awe of him.”
